
...Like so many Black Chicagoans, Oscar DePriest (1871-1951) doesn’t get his due. Not only did he served three terms in Congress, Mr. DePriest made history by being the first African-American to be elected to Congress in the 20th Century in 1929. Without him, it is very unlikely the state would have seen the proliferation of Black elected officials from U.S. Rep. William Dawson to President Barack Obama.
