Richard Boykin, Willie Wilson and William “Dock” Walls have run for office a dozen times and have only one win among them. It is a clear sign the voting public isn’t interested in seeing them in elected office.
Apparently, that isn’t deterring Boykin as his name has popped up as one of the slew of people planning to run for Cook County State’s Attorney when Kim Foxx, the incumbent, leaves office next year.
Foxx, who will have been in the job for seven and one-half years at that point is on the record saying she will not seek re-election for a third term. After one term as a Cook County Commissioner, Boykin has had no success in landing in any of the offices he has subsequently run for. Those efforts include:
2018 bid for re-election to the Cook County Board of Commissioners
2020 run for Clerk of the Cook County Court
2022 attempt to garner the nomination for Cook County Board President
Maybe it is the fact that the state’s attorney seat won’t have an incumbent that is fueling his desire to run again. However, pragmatism should prevail, and Boykin recognize that his opposition to Cook County Board President’s “soda tax” in 2017 and his subsequent attempt to unseat her created a mortal enemy. One whom many, especially in the Democratic Party consider the most influential in the region. Besides her county government role, Preckwinkle is chair of the Cook County Democratic Party. Winning a county-wide race without her backing amounts to a pipedream. One would think a fourth loss for Boykin would be truly embarrassing.
